PERIOD STIGMATIZATION, A MAJOR CHALLENGE FOR THE GIRL-CHILD
Growing up, there is always that stage as a young girl where it seems like everything is happening all at once. The beginning of the adolescent years and all the changes it ushers can be a lot to take for many female teenagers.
As the year passes and with much more period experience, most girls eventually come to understand that menstruation is healthy and natural and nothing to be ashamed of, but the first few years have been a tussle for most teenagers.
One of the major challenges young girls face in this stage is period stigmatization. From physical problems like lack of access to sanitary supplies to the verbal shaming of menstruating teenagers as dirty or unclean. This is a result of misinformation lack of proper education for both girls and boys in our respective societies. You should never have to feel ashamed or like an outcast for a natural.
Divapads believe that open seminars on menstruation with the engagement of both males and females and the community as a large is a way to end period stigmatization. On the 22nd of November 2022, we partnered with Sanitary Aid For Nigerian Girls (SANG) for a CSR at HeCareth Orphanage, Akobo Ibadan, and Orogun grammar school, Orogun Ibadan, Oyo state.
We engaged the students with topics ranging from menstrual health and period stigmatization and donated a total of 1000 Diva Sanitary Pads.
We are committed to our vision of a world where a girl child feels safe and secure in her body.
